Technology and
Communications
Pendleton is served with
redundant fiber optic service; the Eastern
Ring runs through the center of the city.
The local ILEC is Qwest with both a
high-speed data switch and digital main
switch in their Pendleton facility. There
are multiple CLEC’s that distribute
bandwidth; both ATM and DSL are available in
most business and residential areas of the
city. In addition, Level 3 Communications
has a “power-up facility” just northwest of
town, with conduit laid underground from
their facility into the airport area. There
is also a spur from the eastern ring into
the airport industrial area, from which a
new POP could be established.
The power poles, on which space can be
leased to hang above ground data
distribution systems, are owned by Pacific
Power.
Bandwidth is currently distributed with T-1
type lines, which provide abundant capacity
for most applications; however, the Blue
Mountain Community College is currently
pursuing fiber-optic connectivity to host
multiple distance education classes. This is
expected to provide the opportunity to
create an inner-city fiber ring to better
serve emerging business parks and
educational facilities.
The community is very well served from a
technology and telecommunications
standpoint.
