Message from the President

“Welcome to Pendleton!”

Say that with a big smile and you’ve joined the hospitable attitude of our residents! Whether you are in town for a visit or are looking for a new home for your family or business, we are very pleased to share it with you.

The spirit of Pendleton cannot be described…it must be felt. I am confident you will find what you are looking for here and might even experience a few surprises as you discover the wide array of activities and opportunities available. And maybe you’ll find yourself saying, like so many others, “I came for a visit, but stayed 'cause I just fell in love with Pendleton!”

Pendleton has a long history of rich and varied traditions. From the Pendleton Round-Up to the Pendleton Woolen Mills to the legacy of the Confederated Tribes to our rich agricultural heritage, Pendleton’s traditions are not simply artifacts of the past, but enduring and vivid elements of everyday life. Binding these traditions is a culture of fine craftsmanship. From hand-crafted saddles to Tribal beadwork to beautifully designed blankets to downtown’s striking architecture, this spirit of fine craftsmanship infuses our community and provides a beautiful background for Pendleton’s visitor industry, as well as for our own citizens.

2010 is definitely the time to Let'er Buck in Pendleton! The Centennial Celebration of the world-famous Pendleton Round-Up will encompass the entire year, culminating in world-class rodeo the second week in September. We have a long and proud history, as evidenced by the Pendleton Woolen Mill’s hundred years of production, our Century Farms, historic homes and many businesses with incredible longevity.

Although we celebrate historic Pendleton, we have partnered it with 21st century technologies and opportunities for success in every sector. One of Pendleton’s strengths is its economic diversity. With a strong agricultural economic foundation, the Pendleton region has a dynamic make-up providing a resilient and robust foundation for your business and the future. New developments include:

- Newly accessible industrial land with more than 400 available acres adjacent to Pendleton’s airport.
- The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation’s new Coyote Business Park have attracted two Fortune 500 companies and continue aggressive expansion plans.
- Downtown stimulus grants and low interests loans are available to ‘Jump Start’ new business and renovate core buildings.
- St. Anthony Hospital has announced the development of a new, state-of-the-art healthcare campus in Pendleton to serve the region.
- Blue Mountain Community College has announced plans to expand education access throughout our region to provide academic and job skill development.
- The City of Pendleton continues fresh water and water treatment upgrades to meet Oregon’s stringent requirements and our future needs.
Pendleton’s small-town closeness provides our people with excellent livability factors: Acres and acres of city parks. A huge aquatic center. The radically awesome Sk8 Park. The Umatilla River flowing through town where you can fish and watch wildlife, and the River Parkway walking, riding bikes or jogging. Award-winning youth sports and activities programs. Art classes. Community theater. Symphony and chorale concerts. A student-centric community college. Great schools that continually strive for excellence. Proximity to winter and summer sports areas and great sport hunting. This is just a partial list; really, there’s more.

We are glad you’re taking a closer look at Pendleton. The Pendleton Chamber of Commerce is the only organization in the area whose principle goal is to create a strong local economy. I encourage you to utilize the chamber and all that our office has to offer…business services, referrals, marketing, visitor information, resources, relocation information and much more. If you’re new to the area, we want you to feel welcome, successful and like you’re an integral part of our community from the start. And if you’re wondering how to best fit in with the locals, SMILE!
